FIND THE RIGHT MAKEUP BRUSH

FIND THE RIGHT MAKEUP BRUSH

By Lonni Sandbjerg
Real hair vs synthetic hair makeup brushes? We quell many of your makeup brush doubts with our expert guide.

Can It Be So Difficult For Me To Find Out Which Makeup Brush To Use?

The short answer is yes. Good tools in gifted hands create masterpieces. Apply the wrong tools to the right products or vice versa and the result will be anything but a masterpiece. Your choice of brush has a big effect on how professional your makeup looks.

The art of applying makeup has been likened to creating a beautiful piece of artwork. Makeup brings out the best in you, highlighting your strengths and hiding your weaknesses and defects. Every woman wants to stand out and to be unique, why else would we spend as much time as we do decorating ourselves in colourful, captivating makeup that draws the attraction of those around us?

Have you tried standing in front of the mirror and applied a good foundation and concealer, only to experience your eye shadow drip down your cheeks? Accidents like these can be a combination of different factors:

  1. Your eyeshadow may simply be too old and withered to work with
  2. A poorly assembled eyeshadow
  3. You have made the rookie mistake of forgetting to apply primer
  4. You could also just as easily be using the wrong brush

How To Choose The Right Brush For You

Makeup Brushes Made of Real Hair

Makeup brushes for powder, blush and eyeshadow that are made using real hair are generally considered to be “dry.” Sheep wool or pony hair are some of the typical examples of materials used to build brushes of this calibre.

Synthetic Brushes

Synthetic makeup brushes made from materials such as nylon are considered to be “wet.” They are termed so because they don’t absorb all the moisture contained in your makeup. As such, synthetic brushes are meant to be used on liquid concealer, primer, foundation, lipstick, cream, eyeshadow, cream blush and so on. This being the case, these brushes won’t hold dry eyeshadow, causing it to drip. Dry brushes, mentioned previously, will, however.
In similar vein, if you use a brush made from real hair on liquid makeup, the hair strands will absorb the pigment, causing their destruction over time. Both product as well as brush are ruined by improper use and the end result on your face are far from satisfying.
Conversely, when you use brushes made of real hair on dry eyeshadow, the hair latches onto your skin pigment and allows for drip-free application. The result is an eyeshadow that rests securely on your brows.
In all cases, avoid drowning your tools in different products. Less is always more!

As a rule of thumb:

Dry product, dry brush (Made from real hair)

Liquid product, wet brush (synthetic)
